Ban on Bullfighting in CDMX to be Voted On

After a series of protests between bullfighting supporters and animal rights activists, the Political Coordination Board (Jucopo) of the Congress of Mexico City has decided to bring the citizen initiative to prohibit bullfighting to the plenary for a vote next Tuesday, March 18. On this date, all deputies, especially those from Morena, will have to define their stance on the ruling.

Prior to setting the voting date, demonstrations by bullfighting supporters and opponents took place at the capital's Congress. Amid this controversy, figures such as Pedro Haces Lago, a deputy from Morena, have proposed the possibility of modernizing bullfighting as a valid alternative to preserve bullfighting traditions in Mexico City and avoid the loss of thousands of jobs.

In the words of Pedro Haces Lago: "There are other ways like modernization, I think we need to discuss non-bullfighters on one side, and bullfighters on the other (...) we need to discuss together how to preserve bullfighting in Mexico City and modernize it." Additionally, Jesús Sesma expressed: “The commitment is as follows: On the 14th of this month, it will be voted in commissions; for this ruling, the days 15, 16, and 17 of March will be enabled as working days (...) and on the 18th, I urge you, I ask you to accompany us here to celebrate what we have fought for so many years, which is to stop bullfighting in this city.”

On the other hand, there have been moments of tension among the protesters, with a notable aggression directed by bullfighters towards Deputy Jesús Sesma. Within Congress, it has been agreed to continue the process of ruling on the citizen initiative that seeks to eradicate bullfighting. The Commission on Constitutional Points and Citizen Initiatives will meet on Friday, March 14, to approve the initiative, which will be debated in the plenary on Tuesday, March 18.

In this context, it is worth mentioning that there is a proposal to promote an amparo before the Judiciary in case the prohibition of bullfighting is approved, seeking to suspend the elimination of bullfighting. All this occurs amid an intense discussion that mobilizes supporters and detractors of this traditional practice in Mexico City.
